New York State has some of the highest property taxes in the United States. If you’re trying to find ways to lower your property taxes, here are two options:
1) New York State 🗽 has several property tax exemption programs. Some of the most common property tax exemptions include STAR (School Tax Relief), senior citizens exemptions, veteran’s exemptions, exemptions for persons with disabilities, and exemptions for agricultural properties. The School Tax Relief exemption or STAR is based off of level of income and will only apply to your school taxes. In most districts, school taxes make up the largest proportion of your tax bill. There are two types of STAR exemptions: Basic and Enhanced. Basic applies if you (and your spouse) make a combined total of less than $250,000 a year. Enhanced applies if you are over the age of 65 and make less than $90,000 a year.

To qualify for a senior citizen exemption, the senior must be over the age of 65. This exemption can potentially reduce property assessments by up to 50%. Veterans’ exemptions apply to those who have served in the US Armed forces 🎖️, including the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and/or Coast Guard. Exemptions for persons with disabilities can also grant up to a 50% reduction on the property’s assessment, similar to the senior citizen exemption. Applications for the majority of tax exemptions are due at the beginning of March. For more detailed information on all exemptions contact the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
